Day 308: Sunday July 18
Here's that plant I was telling you about on Sunday, when I took this but had a buggy computer and it was too late to post by the time it was sorted out. More on that later. Anyway, does anybody know what it is, exactly?

I think it's a Chinese lantern - I found this online: "In the English speaking world, this delicate and beautiful plant is known as Physalis, Chinese Lantern, Strawberry Tomato, Winter Cherry, Bladder Cherry or Cape Gooseberry, and is a relative of the tomatillo in the Solanaceae family."
ReplyDeleteI thought it looked like a chinese lantern as well. We'll see whether it turns orange, I suppose, then we'll know for sure. Oooh, the mystery of it all.
ReplyDeleteHi - I hope you don't mind me commenting. I blog stalk you occasionally :) (I was in some of your husband's classes when he taught @ college). My mum has these in her yard. We always called them pumpkin flowers since they turn orange in the fall. I loved them when I was little - my sister and I would always rip them open and pull out the "little ball" (probably seed). This brought back memories! Not sure of the real name though...sorry! Btw love your photos!

ReplyDeleteCool about the plant. I've always loved chinese lanterns, and it appears from your description, especially the orange colour and the fruit inside that's what it is. How fun that just randomly appeared in the flower bed!
