I just thought this was really cool.
Hubs and Miss J did a little experiment where they boiled sugar and water (I'm sorry, I don't know the proportions), added a little food coloring, put it in a jar, and suspended a string inside the liquid. After about two weeks, they got this:
Sugar crystals formed on the string! And it was like a crystal garden on the bottom of the jar, and a hard, sugary coating formed on the top. It was fun to watch.
Hubs asked what we should do with it now that the experiment was done. I suggested making it into a necklace. They were certainly pretty enough. I'm not sure if having a necklace that attracted ants would be such a brilliant move, though.
I certainly wouldn't recommend eating it. After two weeks...bleh.

Really cool. I just came from a blog that showed giant crystals. Now I see how delicate they can be too:)
That is really cool! It reminds me of rock candy.
I loved making (tryin got make) sugar candy when I was a kid. Mine never turned out because I disrupted it daily...I was quite the impatient one!
Ocean Girl: I was amazed at how this worked out. I'm not particularly scientifically minded, so I love when hubby does something like this with the kids.
Maureen: After you said that, it reminded me of the candy that you can get that looks just like this, only lots more, on a stick. Do you know what I'm talking about? I'll just bet it's done the same way. Only bigger. And more sanitary. LOL
Suzicate: You can EAT this? We thought about it, then decided it probably wouldn't be a good idea, and tossed it. Now I'm bummed out. Guess we'll just have to try it again!
