Day 99: Corner View

Books.

Oh my.  I hadn't checked the CV topic until I opened my feed and saw entries for it.  Books.

My favorite.

It's a serious addiction.  Once I start a book I cannot put it down until it's done.  Doesn't matter what:  Mystery.  Drama.  Classic.  Biography.  History.  Art.  The world could be coming to an end and I'd  be ordering it to hold on until I was done, please.  And my commanding yet desperate tone would, indeed, cause things to halt until I was finished.

Worked at a two bookstores while going through university. Worked in a public library one summer.  Love love LOVE being surrounded by books.  In one of the bookstores, an independent bookstore in Edmonton, they had a little satellite shop a block away where they sold stuff they wanted to clear out. Racks and racks of Penguin classics, among other things (see the line on the top book in the photo?  It was from that shop).  I indulged.  Really.  And now I have boxes of the classics.  Yes, they're in paperback.  But they're still awesome!

The bookshelves upstairs are lined with Hubby's books.  Hundreds of books on WWII, history, and art, as well as biographies and interesting miscellany.  Great book of his?  The King of the Confessors.  Can't remember the author.  About the aquisition of an amazing religious artifact.  The story is fascinating.

Most of my books are packed away, since we were going to move last year and the job situation didn't work out.  But I kept a few on the shelves.  A  bookshelf without books is a sad, sad piece of furniture.

Favorite novel? The one on the bottom.  Mark Helprin's "Memoirs from Antproof Case." If you want to immerse yourself in swirling, beautiful, haunting, yet insanely funny language, check it out.  His other books are great, too.  I didn't like "A Winter's Tale," as much.  It's beautiful, but not my favorite.  Memoirs?  Definitely my favorite novel.  Ever.

Thank you for placing the books horizontally so we can all read the titles easily. I have been less considerate with mine, I'm afraid. I remember reading The Woman in White as I travelled across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Express. It was the longest book I could find: more than 900 pages, as I recall, and a wonderfully mysterious story too.

Thanks for stopping by, Ian. I just grabbed a handful at random. Some of my favorites are on loan to a lady who had a heart attack last year. She's had them for about a year now, so I suppose I should go over and retrieve them... The Trans-Siberian Express? Yes. The Woman in White would do it. Or Les Mis. You'd either be reading or it would put you to sleep. Either way, it would help you pass the time.

I'm totally with you on this: a house should be absolutely stuffed with books! Thanks for sharing so many of yours!

I hadn't heard of that book; I'll have to check it out.

I love reading all those corner views, I love it when people meet up and talk about books even if it's only a virtual meeting! Nice selection, I've never actually tried anything by Mark Helprin, so thank you for this recommendation

same here. so glad to read so many bloggers are book lovers too.
joyce (@ a perfect beginning) posted the best quote by cicero, which is really fitting after reading your post: "To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul"

I am like that too if I find a good book I can't put it down. I have been known to stay up all night to read. Enjoy! xo

I love the *smell* of books, too! Don't forget the smell. I spotted a pile of books by a dumpster that turned out to be from the late 1800's! What an amazing find!

Another thing we have in common-

Otli: I KNOW we share the same passion for books. Loved your photos.

Emily: STuffed. Overflowing. Piled on the floor. Yup. :o)

Robert: I feel the same way. I'd be lost without them.

Maureen: Then take a nice, deep breath--and dive into Helprin. Soldier of the Great War is another of his that is excellent.

Polly: Me, too. It's been fun to see what everyone else has to say. I don't know why Helprin isn't very well known. He is an amazing writer.

La Ninja: That's a great quote! I think I'll have to frame it. :o)

Joyce: Ah--me, too. It's a sickness, indeed.

TKW: oooh! I'm gonna make Helprin addicts out of everyone!!!

Jane: I'm not sure where I found that button. On someone's blog sidebar somewhere. I liked it!!!

Merrilymarylee: I know--your comment says it all.

Kathryn: Yes--the smell. I wish they could bottle it, and I'd daub some behind my ears. hehe.
